The official population of Finland as of 31 December 2009 was 5,351,427 people. The share of foreign-born population is 2.9% (155,706), 5.4% (290,000) of the population is Swedish-speaking.
While Finnish local authorities have relatively small populations, the average size of local authorities has increased in recent years because of mergers. According to the 2009 population data the average size of local authorities was 15,378 people.

There are eight Finnish local authorities with over 100,000 residents and one third of the country's whole population live there. Over a half of all local authorities have a population of less than 6,000 but their total populations amount to only some 10% of all population.
The largest Finnish local authority by population size is the city of Helsinki (583,350 residents) and the smallest is Sottunga (125 residents).
